Alleghany High School hosts impactful mock DUI incident demonstration ahead of homecoming dance, coordinated by Mountain Gateway Community College
Low Moor, VA - On October 3rd, Alleghany High School students experienced a powerful demonstration of the dangers of impaired driving, thanks to a coordinated effort led by Mountain Gateway Community College.
The event featured a mock drunk driving accident, aimed at educating students on the severe consequences of driving under the influence, just ahead of the school’s homecoming dance.
“We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who helped make the mock accident on October 3 a meaningful event for our students. Special appreciation goes to the Mountain Gateway Community College EMS program, Homer’s Parts and Accessories, local law enforcement, fire, and rescue teams. Your support highlights the strength of our community and its commitment to student safety,” said Alleghany High School Principal Derek Cantrell.
The exercise was meticulously organized by Kayla Cahoon, head of the EMS program at Mountain Gateway Community College. Local law enforcement officers participated, emphasizing the legal repercussions of drunk driving, including criminal charges and potential litigation.
"We are blessed to have the first responder community that we do and it's great to see us able to work so well together towards a great cause,” said Cahoon. “It is our hope that by making these demonstrations seem as real as possible, that students will begin to understand the true potential magnitude of one poor choice. If we can help even one student avoid a tragedy that involves injury or loss of life, then we have excelled. "
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Homer’s Parts and Accessories, the Covington Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Covington EMS, the Clifton Forge Rescue Squad, Clifton Forge Fire and EMS, the Selma Fire Department, the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office, the Covington Division of Police and the Virginia State Police for their involvement and participation in the demonstration.
This event underscores the commitment of Alleghany Highlands Public Schools, Mountain Gateway Community College and the broader community to student safety and education.
