Advanced Manufacturing/Wind Turbine Technology Dual Enrollment Scholarship
Offered to graduating high school seniors who have completed one of the following dual enrollment classes that are transferrable to one of the above MGCC programs: English, Technical Math 1, Pre-Calculus, and/or Calculus AND have enrolled in either of the above programs. Five, $100 awards will be given.
Advanced Manufacturing/Wind Turbine Technology Scholarship
Be a graduating senior from a high school in the College’s service area OR have completed at least 50% of the requirements for the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Advanced Manufacturing and Packaging Technology or Wind Turbine Service Technology. Must be a full time student.
Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce Annual Scholarship
Established by the chamber in 2004 to assist with tuition/book expenses for a graduating senior from Alleghany or Covington High School who resides in the Alleghany Highlands and has made MGCC their college of choice.
Bank of Botetourt, H. Watts Steger, III Scholarship
Established in 2004 to assist deserving students from James River, Lord Botetourt, Northside, Parry McCluer, or Rockbridge County High Schools, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who has made MGCC their college of choice and intends to pursue a degree in either business or the fine arts.
BARC Electric Co-Op Scholarship
Established in 1999 by the BARC Electric Cooperative to assist a graduating senior from the MGCC service area who is pursuing a math or science curriculum.
Barry Hillsman Forestry Scholarship
Established by Mr. & Mrs. John D. Hillsman in memory of their son who was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces and was a student in the MGCC Forestry program.
Betsy P. Saville Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Established by Mrs. Saville’s husband, Leon; daughter, Kathy; and by Dr. & Mrs. Williams J. Ellis, in memory of Mrs. Saville, a caring person who was devoted to the nursing profession. Awarded to a first or second-year MGCC nursing student.
Betty Andrews Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Established by the late Arch Bennett in memory of his dear friend, who demonstrated a dedication to and love for others all her life, this scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year MGCC nursing student.
Bridging the Gap–College to the Community Internship Scholarship
Internship Scholarship — Established by a gift from Judy Cunningham Dotson made in memory of her father, Ralph Linwood Cunningham, the scholarship will help provide current MGCC students (at the time of application) who have completed at least one-half of their curriculum requirements at MGCC with the opportunity to seek hands-on learning experiences. 3.0 GPA required.
Bubbles, Bands & Brunch Scholarships for Continuing Students
Funded from proceeds from the bi-annual “Bubbles, Bands & Brunch” fundraisers, these scholarships were established by the MGCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors to assist student who have completed at least one full year ( min. 24/max. 45 credit hours) at MGCC and intend to continue studies at MGCC as a full time student. Minimum 3.0 GPA required.
Caperton Book Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students
Established by Williams and Nancy Caperton to provide assistance to an adult residing in Alleghany county of the City of Covington who chose not to pursue post-secondary education immediately after high school graduation, but now wishes to enroll in college to gain marketable job skills, facilitate their career advancement or successfully change career paths. Requires student to have successfully completed at least 25% of the credits needed for the certificate or associate degree program in which he/she is enrolled. Requires high school diploma or GED certificate.
Carolyn B. Nettleton Scholarships for Business
Established through a gift from the Nettleton Foundation in memory of Miss Nettleton, an astute business woman who was a vital force in the Covington community for many years. The co-owner and manager of Nettleton, Inc., she served as the acting City Manager for the City of Covington in 1974. She was the first woman to be named Virginia Retailer of the Year, to be elected President of the Virginia Building Materials Association and to serve on a local bank board of directors. Awarded to qualified MGCC students enrolled in a transfer, associate degree or certificate business curriculum.
Carter Scholarships
Established by a bequest from Marjorie Carter McCarthy of Covington in memory of her sister, Mary Lee Carter Hubbard Raeburn Carter Stull and Margaret Carter Hepler and herself, the Carter Scholarships are available to Alleghany, Bath, and Covington High School graduates who make MGCC their college of choice. A native of Alleghany County, Mrs. McCarthy was a 1925 graduate of Covington High School. She taught French, English and history at Millboro High School in Bath County for seven years.
Central High School Lucy Gleason Memorial Scholarship
Miss Gleason, a graduate of Clifton Forge High School, taught for forty-six years in the Alleghany County School system, including thirty-two at Central School and five at Alleghany High School. Donations to the scholarship fund have been made by family members, friends, and former students and classes to honor the impact “Miss Lucy” had on their lives. Recipient must be pursuing a career in education.
Christopher Baker Memorial Scholarship
Established by Rodney and Doris Withrow Baker through contributions from family and friends after Christopher died from injuries related to an automobile accident on January 9, 2013. A native of Alleghany County, Christopher was a member of Granbery United Methodist Church. A 2010 graduate of Alleghany High School, he attended MGCC for two years and completed one semester at New River Community College. Chris played soccer for AHS and the Alleghany Highlands Youth Soccer Association. He earned his Eagle Scout Award while a member of Troop 31 BSA.
Colin P. Ferguson Honorary Scholarship
Established by Dr. John Grimes, a Clifton Forge native, to honor Mr. Ferguson, a former teacher and coach, for his guidance and commitment to young people and his belief in the importance of education. Awarded to a Clifton Forge resident who is a graduating senior at Alleghany High School. A Minimum 2.0 GPA required.
Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship
The Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship is provided by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education. It is awarded to a graduating senior from the MGCC service area who is a first-time college student that has excelled academically and has demonstrated a commitment to developing leadership potential and a willingness to mentor future community college scholars. Requires a minimum 3.5 GPA, additional essay and may require an interview.
Covington Hot Springs Rotary Club Scholarship
Established by the club as a way to continue the Covington Hot Springs Rotary’s support and promotion of youth in the Alleghany Highlands. It is Awarded to a graduating senior from Alleghany, Bath, or Covington High School.
Curtis A. Smith, 116th Infantry, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1033 Scholarship
Established by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1033, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Alleghany and Covington High Schools who makes MGCC their college of choice.
Dabney S. Lancaster Memorial Scholarship
Established by the family of Dr. Dabney S. Lancaster, a long-time educator who served as the Virginia State Superintendent of Public Instruction, was President of Longwood College, Chairman of the state Council of Higher Education, and for whom MGCC (Dabney S. Lancaster Community College) is named. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from the MGCC service area.
David and Karyn Warren Scholarship in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas N. Warren Scholarship
Established by his wife, Jean Warren and friends and family, this scholarship honors the life and memory of Dr. Thomas N. Warren in recognition of his service as Head of pathology at Alleghany Regional Hospital and as Chairman of the MGCC Local Board of Advisors.
Deborah Carol and Mark Wayne Lockhart Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Established by family and friends in memory of siblings Deborah and Mark Lockhart. Mark, a graduate of Alleghany High School, MGCC, UVA, and Piedmont Community College, worked as a nurse in the Heart and Burn units at UVA Hospital and was a member of the Palmyra Rescue Squad. Deborah was also a graduate of AHS and Jefferson College of Health Sciences. Deborah was a cardiovascular and trauma surgeon. After the death of her brother Mark, Deborah worked diligently to help enhance safety practices in ambulance transport in the US and worldwide. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Alleghany High School who is pursuing a career in the medical arts field.
MGCC Administration of Justice Book Scholarship
The MGCC ADJ Club funds two book scholarships each spring and fall, which are funded by proceeds from the club’s annual golf tournament. Recipients must be members in good standing in the MGCC ADJ program and active in the MGCC ADJ Club.
MGCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors Scholarship
Established by and funded through yearly personal contributions by the MGCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors, this scholarship is awarded to an outstanding graduating senior from the College’s service area. Minimum 3.5 GPA required.
MGCC Honors Scholarship
Established the Educational Foundation, the Honors Scholarship is a two-year scholarship providing tuition/book assistance to exceptional graduates from high schools in the College’s service area. Minimum 3.5 GPA required.
MGCC Practical Nursing Scholarship
Applicants must have been admitted to MGCC and accepted into the MGCC Practical Nursing Program housed at the Rockbridge Regional Center in Buena Vista by July 1. Requires high school diploma or GED. Must have successfully completed the Nursing Entrance Exam.
Dorothy Ayers Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Established by her husband and children to honor Mrs. Ayer’s memory and her love of learning, this scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year MGCC nursing student. A life-long resident of Alleghany County, Mrs. Ayers considered continuing education to be of the utmost importance
Durvin Family Scholarship for Nurses
Established by Benjamin H. Durvin, Jr. in honor and in memory of the Durvin family of Clifton Forge who strongly believe in the great importance of the nursing profession, this scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year MGCC nursing program.
Edward Pennell Brooks OCC Scholarship
Established in 1988 by the late E. Pennell Brooks of Bath County. Mr. Brooks was a Vice President with Sears Roebuck and a Dean of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Industrial Management, in honor of a group of long-time friends. Awarded to a graduating senior from the MGCC service area; however, preference is given to graduates of Bath County High School.
Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship
Established by Lillian Braun of Harrisonburg, VA, in honor and memory of her sister, a long-time resident of Alleghany County, to provide assistance for students who are residents of the MGCC service area. May be awarded to graduating high school seniors, continuing MGCC students, nursing students or non-traditional students.
Ethel Mae Grimes Dorsey Nursing Scholarship
Established by family and friends in memory of Mrs. Dorsey, a dedicated, hardworking, and caring person who was devoted to the nursing profession, this scholarship may be awarded to a graduating high school senior from the MGCC service area or to a first or second-year nursing student.
Ferguson/Proffit Nursing Scholarship
Established in memory of her parents, Eunice Ferguson Proffit and Melvin F. Proffit by Donna Vaughn and family, this scholarship provides assistance to graduating seniors from Alleghany and James River High Schools who intend to pursue a career in nursing at MGCC.
First Citizens Bank Small Business/Entrepreneurial Scholarship
Established by First Citizens Bank, this scholarship provides assistance to persons seeking small business/entrepreneurial training. Applicants may be planning to start a new business or already engaged in a small business.
First National Bank Scholarship
The First National Bank Scholarship was established to assist students from the bank’s service are who wish to pursue post-secondary education at MGCC. The scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors from Alleghany and Bath County, Covington, Greenbrier East or Greenbrier West High Schools, continuing students who have completed at least 24 hours of study at MGCC, or non-traditional students who did not attain a degree immediately following high school.
Frank and Charlotte Williamson Annual Scholarship
The Frank and Charlotte Williamson Annual Scholarship was established by the Williamsons in recognition of the MGCC Educational Foundation’s mission to “Build Lives…Build Futures…Build Hope” for area residents. Avid supporters of education, Mr. and Mrs. Williamson understand the importance of post-secondary education and its ability to change lives and communities. Mr. Williamson was a professor in the MGCC Business department for more than 30 years.
George N. Chucker & Edith-Raab Chucker Scholarship
Honors the memory of Dr. George Chucker, a beloved Highland’s physician and long-time Educational Foundation board member and former President, and his wife, Edith Raab-Chucker. After several years in the nursing profession, Mrs. Chucker continued her education to become a certified nurse anesthetist. Instrumental in establishing a school for nurse anesthetists in Clifton Forge and Covington. Awarded to either a graduating high school senior planning to enroll in the MGCC nursing program or a current MGCC nursing student.
Harry & Virginia Walton Memorial Scholarship
Established by the Walton’s five daughters as a tribute to their parents’ love of education and the Alleghany Highlands, this scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in either the MGCC nursing program or in one of the physical sciences. Renowned for his commitment to Alleghany County through his service on the Alleghany County board of Supervisors, School Board, the MGCC Local Board, and the Fifth Planning District, Mr. Walton also was the recipient of the Medallion of Merit Award presented by MGCC to local citizens who have made significant contributions to the betterment of life in a community served by the college. A nurse for many years, Mrs. Walton joined her husband in community service through her participation on the District Home Board and the Regional League of Older Americans.
Helen F. Dickson Scholarships
Established by a bequest from the estate of Helen Dickson, a native and long-time resident of Alleghany County. Miss Dickson encouraged young people to continue their educations after high school, emphasizing that it would broaden their perspectives, enhance their life opportunities, and improve the quality of live for future generations. Awarded to a graduating senor from Alleghany and/or Covington High Schools who has made MGCC their college of choice.
Highlands Community Bank Scholarship
Established by the bank to assist graduating seniors from Alleghany, Bath County or Covington High School with tuition/book expenses at MGCC. Applicants must be pursuing a career in business.
Jesse A. Wright Memorial Scholarship
Established by Mr. Wright’s wife, Clara; his son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Anne Wright; and by his nephew, Dr. Courtney Persinger of Cincinnati, in memory of Mr. Wright, a native of Alleghany County. Mr. Wright grew up on Potts Creek and founded Covington Motor Company. He strongly believed in providing opportunities for young people, especially through education.
Josh Patterson Forestry Scholarship

Judy M. Deeds Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Established by friends and fellow members of the Appalachian Forest Management Group in memory of Mrs. Deeds, a life-long resident of Bath County. A graduate of the MGCC Nursing program and Radford University, Deeds spent most of her nursing career working as an RN for Bath County Community Hospital. She also worked at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington. Awarded to a first or second-year nursing student residing in the College’s service area.

Katherine V. H. Perret & Horrace E. Perret-Gentil Scholarship
Gentil Scholarship-Established by a bequest from the estate of Katherine V.H. Perret, a graduate of Clifton forge High school who taught physics and astronomy at Randolph Macon Woman's College and at Douglass College. Awarded to a graduating senior from the MGCC service area who plans to attend MGCC and who aspires to become a teacher of science or mathematics.
L. Paul Wiggins Memorial Scholarship
Established by Mr. Tom Wiggins, a retired MGCC guidance counselor, and his wife in memory of their son who died in a boating accident near Anchorage, Alaska in 1998, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from the MGCC service area.
Lewis Gale Hospital–Alleghany Nursing Scholarship
Established by Alleghany Regional Hospital, this scholarship normally is awarded to a second-year MGCC nursing student who is a resident of Alleghany County of the City of Covington. The recipient must agree to accept employment, if offered, at ARH for at least one year following graduation from the MGCC nursing program. 3.5 GPA required.
LIFT Scholarship
Established by a bequest to the Educational Foundation from the estate of Mrs. Cornelia Long. Awarded to a graduating senior from the MGCC service area.
Lois W. Morgan Nursing Scholarship
Established by a bequest from the estate of Lonnie H. Morgan, Jr., in honor of Mrs. Morgan’s many years of dedication and devotion to the nursing profession. Mrs. Morgan was a retired nurse with 34 years of service with the C&O Hospital, Emmett Memorial Hospital, and Alleghany Regional Hospital. Awarded to a first or second-year MGCC nursing student.
Lousie Kern Lemon Nursing Scholarship
Lumos Networks Scholarship
Originally named for and funded by nTelos Communications Foundation, the scholarship is now named for Lumos Networks and provides assistance to a graduating senior from the company’s service area. The student must have exhibited leadership skills through significant involvement in school and/or community activities and must be planning to enroll as a full-time student in a transfer program at MGCC.
Lydia M. Woods Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Established by Mrs. Woods’ sons to honor her long career in the nursing profession, this scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year MGCC nursing student. Mrs. Woods graduated from the C&O Hospital School of Nursing and was employed by that hospital until her retirement
Madge Chandler Carr Book Scholarship
Established in memory of Mrs. Carr by her husband, the late Gordon Carr, and her daughter, Joyce Carr Webber. When Mrs. Carr, who completed nursing school during the Great Depression, informed doctors at the hospital that she would have to leave school because she couldn’t pay for her books, the doctors rewarded her potential by paying for her books in order for her to continue. This scholarship is a tribute to her love of and dedication to nursing. Awarded to a first or second-year MGCC nursing student.
Madonna Hepler Nursing Scholarship
Established by Dr. Meade Edmunds and Mrs. Josephine Dellinger in memory of Mrs. Hepler who graduated from the MGCC nursing program and was a nurse at Alleghany Regional Hospital.
Mae S. & Raymond E. Tucker Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Originally created by Mr. Tucker to honor Mrs. Tucker’s memory and her dedication to the nursing profession, the Tuckers’ daughters continue to fund the scholarship to honor the memory of both parents. Awarded to a first or second-year MGCC nursing student.
Mamie B. Hall Scholarship for Prospective Teachers
Established by a bequest from Mrs. Hall’s estate and by memorial gifts from family and friends, this scholarship honors the memory of Mrs. Hall who dedicated her life to teaching the young people of the Alleghany Highlands. Awarded to a graduating senior from Alleghany or Covington High School.

Established by a bequest from Mr. & Mrs. May’s estate to assist a graduating senior from the MGCC service area who has made MGCC their college of choice.
Marjorie G. Carte Scholarship
Established by family, friends, and colleagues in honor and memory of Mrs. Carte, a long-time MGCC faculty member and division chair. Awarded to a graduating senior from the MGCC service area.
Martha Hudson Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Established by her son, Thomas, in memory of Mrs. Hudson who, for many years, worked as a nurse at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Covington. the Covington Junior Woman's Club also contributes yearly to this scholarship. Awarded to a first or second-year nursing student.
Martha P. & Clyde E. Griffith Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Established by their children in memory of “Grif” and “Petie” Griffith, this honors their parent’s love for and dedication to their community and its citizens. Awarded to a first or second year Nursing student.
Master Trooper Jerry L. Hines Scholarship
Established by the Virginia State Police Association in memory of Rockbridge County resident, Jerry Hines, a 22-year veteran of the Department of State Police who was killed in the line of duty in 1989. A cum laude graduate of the MGCC police science program and East Tennessee State University, Jerry was instrumental in the founding of the Virginia State Police Association. Awarded to a graduating senior from the MGCC service area planning to major in criminal justice or forensic science
Merle Weaver Reid Scholarship
Established by a bequest from Mrs. Reid’s estate, this scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors from Alleghany or Covington High Schools who make MGCC their college of choice. A native and long-time resident of the Alleghany Highlands, Mrs. Reid was involved in many service-oriented community organizations.
MGW Communications Scholarship
Established by L. Ron & Bonnie Smith on behalf of the Board of Directors of MGW Communications in Bath County to assist high school graduates or home-schooled students from Bath, Highland, or Augusta counties.
Mr. & Mrs. J. L. Davis Memorial Scholarship
Established by the Rev. Addie Davis as a tribute to her parents and their commitment to family and higher education. The Davises operated a furniture store in downtown Covington for 36 years. Awarded to a graduating senior from the College’s service area.
MWV Scholarship
Reflecting the broadening disciplines that are represented in employment at MWV – engineering, computer science, information technology, and biological/chemical sciences – this scholarship is awarded to a student from the MGCC service area who is pursuing a career in one of the above disciplines and who demonstrates leadership potential as exhibited by involvement in extracurricular activities. Preference is given to children of MWV employees. Minimum 3.0 GPA required.
News-Gazette Scholarship
Established by the News-Gazette in Lexington, Virginia to assist with Rockbridge County residents with expenses in the MGCC Practical Nursing Program.
Richard W. Rusk Scholarships for Alternative Energy
Established through a gift from Richard W. Rusk of Blacksburg. Mr. Rusk is an Associate Professor or Physics Emeritus at Virginia Tech, having taught at the college for more than 30 years. The scholarship is available for newly graduated high school students, continuing students, or non-traditional students in MGCC’s wind energy or other alternative energy program
T. Kenneth & Karin R. Ellis Scholarship
Given by Mrs. Ellis in memory of her late husband, a long-time resident of Hot Springs, VA, whose generosity and contributions to the community and individuals were a top priority during his life. Awarded to a graduating senior from Bath County High School
Talent Search Scholarship
Established by the MGCC Educational Foundation, in conjunction with the Talent Search Program Director, to recognize outstanding Talent Search students. Awarded to graduating high school seniors, who are participants in the Talent Search program. Students should reside in the College’s service area.
Tim Backels Scholarship
Established in 1981 by Dr. & Mrs. John Backels in memory of their son, Tim, a graduate of the former Clifton Forge High School, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Alleghany High School enrolled in the college preparatory curriculum has an AHS varsity athletic letter, demonstrates leadership skills, and is involved in school and community affairs.
Virginia Firefighters Foundation Scholarship
Initiated by the non-profit Virginia Firefighters Foundation to provide scholarship programs at Virginia Community Colleges for the dependents of Virginia’s firefighters or student firefighters. MGCC is proud to be among the first community colleges chosen to receive funds from this organization for this purpose. Requires high school diploma or GED certificate.
Raymond L. Claterbaugh, Sr. Memorial Scholarship
Established by Dr. Raymond L. Claterbaugh, Jr. in memory of his father, a dedicated Highland’s physician for over 43 years, this scholarship is awarded to a student in the second year of the MGCC nursing program who is working to complete an AAS in Nursing Degree at MGCC. Dr. Claterbaugh Sr.’s enthusiasm for his work and devotion to those he served improved the quality of life for numerous individuals.
Richard W. Rusk Scholarships for Alternative Energy

Roadrunner Promise Program
The Roadrunner Promise Program is open to MGCC students; high school, continuing, non-traditional and nursing. The Roadrunner Promise Program is a need based scholarship that helps to remove the financial barriers of attending MGCC. In addition, the Roadrunner Promise helps pay for the cost of books. Acceptance into the program is based on the level of need and current available funding. Students are required to maintain a minimum 2.25 GPA, be enrolled a minimum of 9 credit hours (with a maximum of 15 credit hours) per semester, complete 4 hours of community service per semester, complete an SDV class within the first semester of enrollment and be a resident of the College’s service area. Tammy Caul Carter Book Scholarship
Established by her family in memory of Tammy, who was a graduate of the MGCC nursing program and a recipient of the Nursing Faculty Recognition Award. Awarded to a first or second-year MGCC nursing student.
Vivian N. & Robert F. Sutphin Scholarship
Created by Mr. & Mrs. Sutphin to honor Mrs. Sutphin for over fifty years of service and dedication to the nursing profession, this scholarship is awarded to an adult resident of Alleghany or Bath County who chose not to pursue a post-secondary education immediately after high school graduation, but now wishes to purse a career in nursing by completing an AAS Degree in nursing at MGCC. It is awarded every other year and assists with tuition/book expenses for two years.
Walter L. & Marie P. Johnson Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Established by Lydia Ellen J. Stagnaro in memory of her parents, long-time Clifton Forge residents, the scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year nursing student.
Virginia Firefighters Foundation Scholarship
Initiated by the non-profit Virginia Firefighters Foundation to provide scholarship programs at Virginia Community Colleges for the dependents of Virginia’s firefighters or student firefighters.
