The annual Summer Regional Governor’s School is switching gears this year and is offering an online three-week session on Cybersecurity, from June 15 through July 3, through Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. The deadline to apply is May 11.
For the past 35 years, the area event has been known for its field ecology sessions, but this summer, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, area high school students will be offered a chance to study the challenging world of cybersecurity, all online, instead out of in the field.
The curriculum will include daily, real-time online video conferences and extensive online course work. Virtual classes will be held Monday through Friday. Upon successful completion of the course work students will earn three college credits and a Certificate of Completion from the Governor. The instructor is on staff at DSLCC and has extensive experience in Information Technology and online instruction.
Students will learn how to protect themselves from cyber threats; create their very own cyber world; go hands-on with Linux on the Virginia Cyber Range; gain foundational knowledge and essential skills that are sought after in the industry and explore cyber careers.
Applications for rising 9th through 11th grade students from public, private or home schools in Alleghany, Bath, Botetourt, Highland and Rockbridge counties, as well as the cities of Buena Vista, Covington and Lexington, are now being accepted. Enrollment is limited to twelve participants.
Lack of a home computer or internet convection is not a limiting factor for participants. DSLCC will work with the participant’s family to loan a laptop and find a local WIFI hotspot.
There is no tuition fee, but students are expected to commit to the entire period of coursework.
An application form is available at fieldecology.org. The completed form should be sent to Dr. Sue Rollinson via email at amrollinson@gmail.com or mailed to her at 900 Morris Hollow Road, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
