Excitement builds for Liberal Arts program at Mountain Gateway Community College
Clifton Forge, Va. – Excitement is building around Mountain Gateway Community College’s Liberal Arts Associate of Arts degree program. This flexible, two-year program offers students a comprehensive foundation in subjects such as English, art, theater, music, dance and more, while equipping them with critical skills in writing, communication, and problem-solving—skills that are highly valued by both universities and employers alike.
Under the leadership of Josh Hagy, the new Humanities Program Head, the Liberal Arts program continues to grow, offering students an opportunity to explore their passions, sharpen their intellectual abilities, and prepare for a seamless transfer to four-year universities.
“The Liberal Arts degree at MGCC is perfect for students looking to explore new interests and develop valuable skills in subjects like English, art, theater, music, and dance,” Hagy said. “This flexible, creative program provides a strong academic foundation while helping students build essential skills in communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking — skills that will serve them in any career.”
The program is designed for students who wish to transfer to four-year institutions, providing a smooth transition into fields like education, journalism, philosophy, and social sciences. With a broad mix of core courses and electives, students can tailor their education to their individual interests while gaining the academic knowledge they need to succeed in advanced studies.
Small class sizes and personalized faculty support ensure students receive the guidance they need throughout their academic journey. The Liberal Arts Associate of Arts degree prepares students for university transfer through TransferVA, a program that provides a common curriculum and allows students to transfer from community colleges to Virginia universities. The Liberal Arts program also fosters skills that are in demand across a variety of industries, from research and writing to creative problem-solving and leadership.
“This is the perfect time for students to explore the opportunities available in our Liberal Arts program,” Hagy added. “Whether you’re just starting your college journey or looking to shift career paths, we’re here to support you every step of the way.”
