High school tech gurus: Enrollment now underway for MG-TEC IT Academy at Mountain Gateway Community College
Clifton Forge, Va. - Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC) is excited to announce that enrollment is now open for the MG-TEC IT Academy, an innovative program designed for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are interested in exploring careers in information technology.
Do you know a high school student who enjoys problem-solving, working with computers, or helping others resolve tech issues? The MG-TEC IT Academy offers a unique opportunity to turn these interests into a career. Starting Fall 2025, students can earn college credit while gaining real-world experience in the fields of IT, cybersecurity, robotics, and more.
Students will have the chance to immerse themselves in a hands-on learning environment, where they will engage in exciting activities such as flying drones, building robots, learning ethical hacking, and developing skills to protect businesses from digital threats. With a focus on cybersecurity, cloud computing, and technical support, the program allows students to choose the pathway that aligns with their passions and career goals.
The MG-TEC IT Academy is designed to prepare students for the booming job market in the IT industry, which is expected to grow by 11% from 2019 to 2029, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This growth presents a remarkable opportunity for your child to gain an edge in a competitive field while still in high school. By completing the program, students will earn industry-recognized certifications that can fast-track them to a successful career in IT or help them continue their education in college.
At MG-TEC, we understand the challenges our region faces, with many high school graduates lacking the educational and career opportunities needed to break free from the cycle of poverty. The IT industry provides a pathway out of these challenges, and our goal is to empower students with the skills, resources, and mentorship they need to succeed.
“We aim to give students the tools they need to innovate and thrive in a rapidly changing digital landscape,” said Ashley Pratt, Director of the MG-TEC IT Academy. “By offering hands-on projects, industry partnerships, and a focus on real-world challenges, we are preparing our students for the future of work in technology.”
The program is open to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, with flexible learning options available. Students can attend classes on campus through the Governor’s School Transportation network or choose to participate via Zoom or asynchronously for those who are unable to attend in person.
Enrollment is now open, and the deadline to apply is February 15. This is an incredible opportunity for students to gain valuable experience, earn college credit, and set themselves up for a successful career.
