A program to raise awareness about the potential threat of human trafficking in local communities will be presented at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College on Wednesday, March 27, from 11:30 am to 1 pm.
“A New Look at Human Trafficking Through a Community Lens” is a collaborative effort of DSLCC, Project Horizon in Rockbridge County and Safehome Systems, Inc., in the Alleghany Highlands.
The program will be presented in two locations: the Moomaw Center on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus, and via teleconferencing at the DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center in Room 910. The public is invited to attend.
Human trafficking is defined as the trade of humans for the purpose of forced labor, sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others.
The purpose of the program is to create awareness of potential threats to local youth as well as to create community partnerships in the prevention of human trafficking. The presentation will include information about resources, segments of the population that are vulnerable to trafficking, and explain what community members can do if they suspect someone is being trafficked.
Information as to what both Project Horizon and Safehome Systems, Inc. can do for victims in the local communities will be provided. The program head for DSLCC’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program, Dorothy Hayslett, will be on hand to talk about Truckers Against Trafficking and to explain how the CDL curriculum addresses this issue. Human Trafficking Awareness is also part of the EMS curriculum at DSLCC.
Following the presentation, there will be a panel discussion led by Trichia Bravi of Project Horizon; Wanda Moore of Safehome Systems; and Dorothy Hayslett, representing DSLCC.
The program is free and open to the public. Emergency first responders, members of local law enforcement, school administrators, staff and faculty, and members of the community are all encouraged and invited to attend.
Sonny Side Café will sell food on the main campus between 7:30 am and 1:30 pm.
