EDU 195 M4D, Wednesday - Thursday, 8:30am - 4:30pm, Warren Hall Room 416 (1

Children actively construct mathematical knowledge through problem-solving, reasoning,
and communication. In this course, we will explore how to use evidence-based practices
to facilitate conceptual understanding. We will also explore what conceptual learning
looks like and how we use this to implement the new 2023 Mathematics Standards of
Learning. Furthermore we will investigate how to create a climate conducive to learning
by encouraging students to actively create mathematical representations that will serve
to facilitate connections among concepts. “Mathematics is not merely content to be
memorized, but a way of mak-ing sense of things that require problem-solving and
reasoning in everyday life” (Barody, A.J., & Coslick, R.T., 1998, Fostering Children's
Mathematical Power: An Investigative Approach To K-8 Mathematics Instruction).
