A new scholarship honoring the late Arleigh Warwick St. Clair of Covington has been established at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, it was announced today by Rachael Thompson, Executive Director of the DSLCC Educational Foundation.
This new scholarship is one of more than 100 different scholarships offered by the DSLCC Educational Foundation, which awarded more than $290,000 to 125 students this current school year.
The Arleigh Warwick St. Clair Respiratory Therapy Scholarship, intended for a DSLCC student pursuing a career in respiratory therapy, was created by her husband, Robert Lewis St. Clair. Mrs. St. Clair, who passed away in 2017 after a four-year battle with progressive arthritic lung disease, was a 1975 graduate of DSLCC and an active member of the community.
During her long illness, Mrs. St. Clair became very close with the pulmonary exercise unit at LewisGale Hospital Alleghany. A lifelong resident of Covington, Mrs. St. Clair and her husband of 60 years raised three children, Tim, Lisa, and Steve. They have five grandchildren, Andrew, Daniel, Sarah, Ian, and Amanda; and two great grandchildren, Caitlin and David.
Mrs. St. Clair earned a certificate in Steno-Clerical Arts with a 4.0 GPA while a student at DSLCC.
In her community, she was a member and past president of the Jackson River Garden Club, where she excelled in floral design. She later expanded her artistic design into quilting and was a member of the Peacemaker Quilt Club. She was also a member of Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and the Covington Women’s Club and was a volunteer at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany.
The scholarship is available to high school, continuing, nursing and/or non-traditional students with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students who intend to pursue a career in respiratory therapy are preferred.
The scholarship application for this opportunity, as well as more than 100 scholarships, is available beginning December 3, 2018, at www.dslcc.edu/scholarships with a submission deadline of February 25, 2019.
