Teenie Kegley: A Legacy of Empowerment and Support for Mountain Gateway Community College
Covington, Va. – In the heart of Alleghany County, one woman's remarkable journey from a high school graduate to a pillar of community support exemplifies the transformative power of education and advocacy. Teenie Kegley, a long-time supporter of Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC), has dedicated her life to empowering others through education and community service, leaving a legacy that will resonate for generations.
Teenie’s connection to MGCC traces back over four decades, beginning when she took her first classes at the college, which was then known as Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. Inspired by her husband Warren Kegley, a Vietnam veteran and alumnus of the college, Teenie has since embraced the mission of community colleges as gateways to opportunity, particularly for women and children.
“I grew up dirt poor, and college never entered my mind,” Teenie recalls. “But I decided I wanted to learn more, and education became my path to a better life.”
With just a high school education, Teenie persevered through multiple jobs while raising three children as a single parent, demonstrating that determination can open doors, even when they seem closed.
For over 15 years, Teenie has been a driving force behind Safe Homes, an initiative supporting women and children in need. Her passion for this cause is palpable as she shares, “I lived and breathed for those women and kids. If Dabney had been there when I graduated from high school, my life would have been different.”
Teenie’s commitment to these causes is clear through her active involvement in local organizations and her previous roles on various boards, from which she has recently stepped back to focus on being with her husband.
Teenie’s advocacy extends beyond her immediate community. She and her husband have established scholarships at MGCC, including the Warren & Teenie Kegley Bubbles, Bands & Brunch Scholarship for Continuing Students. This scholarship has supported several students over the years, including Allison Bush in 2019, and Cassandra Karn and Brooklyn Knick in 2017. These scholarships ensure that future generations of students have access to the educational resources they need to thrive.
“When you give money to a scholarship program or other initiatives at the college, you’re passing on your legacy. One hundred years from now, people will remember how you made a difference in their lives,” said Bruce Loving, Development Officer at the MGCC Educational Foundation, reflecting on the long-lasting impact of the Kegley’s contributions.
In recognition of their generous support to the college, the director’s office at the MGCC Educational Foundation was named for Warren and Teenie Kegley in 2016.
Her own family’s achievements highlight the ripple effect of her dedication. Teenie's daughter, once an RN, has become a successful CPA and attorney, while her son runs his own accounting firm. Despite the challenges, including the loss of her youngest child, Teenie’s resilience and unwavering support for her family have shaped a legacy of success.
Looking ahead, Teenie hopes MGCC will continue to expand its offerings, ensuring that students can access the skills necessary for the evolving job market.
“The college is a beacon of hope for so many. I just hope it keeps growing and evolving to meet the needs of the community,” she states.
Teenie Kegley’s story is not just one of personal triumph; it’s a testament to the power of community, education, and the enduring spirit of giving back. Her legacy will undoubtedly inspire countless individuals to pursue their dreams and support others along the way.
